Sagging joists or foundation settlement

Sagging joists or foundation settlement

Posted on April 12, 2019 by Jeremy Livermore, S.E., P.E.

This house in Fullerton had sagging joists. The new homeowner suspected the previous homeowner had a heavy table causing the sag. I crawled under the rased foundation to provide the structural engineering inspection. There really was no water damage to the joists and the flexural stress demand did not exceed the available flexural strength. However, I did recommend a retrofit to lift up the original joists. The homeowner requested a report for a claim against the inspectors insurance.
